So the September NPD numbers was released and it’s quite interesting. According to NPD, console hardware sales saw double digit drop in sales in comparison to September 2014. They chalk that up to the first Destiny release during that month as the factor for the exceptionally high sales during that timeframe.
Microsoft in a statement didn’t reveal much, except that it saw year-on-year growth in Xbox One sales even with the industry falling 23 percent:
“Xbox One continued to see strong momentum in September on the heels of Forza Motorsport 6 and EA Sports FIFA 16, with solid year-over-year growth in console sales and strong engagement on Xbox Live. This holiday Xbox One owners will enjoy the greatest games line-up in the industry and in Xbox history, led by Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Star Wars Battlefront, and the ability to play Xbox 360 games. Xbox One owners will have all this on the fastest, most social Xbox experience ever and with advanced hardware such as the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller. Xbox fans and first-time console buyers can look forward to an epic holiday!”
When it came to software sales, the Sports super genre dominated the charts taking up 4 of the 10 spots. Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain was the best selling non sports title during the month, with Destiny: The Taken King DLC taking up the second spot. Surprisingly, Destiny again sold more on Xbox One than on rival platforms even with certain marketing deals in place.
Top Selling Games for the Month:
- NBA 2K16
- Madden NFL 16
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- FIFA 16
- Destiny: The Taken King
- Super Mario Maker
- Disney Infinity 3.0
- Mad Max
- NHL 16
- Minecraft
Forza Motorsport 6 didn’t chart during the month of September in which it launched, however it’s been sitting in the top 5 of the UK/EU charts for 6 weeks now. With all the Sports titles and highly anticipated AAA games such as Metal Gear Solid and Destiny DLC hitting during the month, it’s not surprising.
With the continued advance of the Xbox One, it will be interesting to see how the Xbox One does this holiday after dominating in 2014.
