The Witching Hour Night Twenty-Eight: Fangoria

When you want to find news about an upcoming movie, television series or a book nowadays you usually don’t have to go beyond a few clicks to find what you’re looking for and more. Back in the day we largely depended on monthly magazines for updates on our most anticipated movies. If you were a fan of horror films in the 80’s and 90’s then you probably read Fangoria magazine.

To understand the importance of Fangoria, you have to remember what the horror scene was like back then. Most horror publications focused on literature or other classic media. Fangoria broke the mold by focusing on (then) current horror movies with interviews, behind the scenes photos of sets and reviews. They didn’t just cover horror movies – they wrote about television shows, books, even music and games that fit in the horror genre. The photos in the magazine were often graphic stills from horror movies in production – definitely not safe for work material.

In 1992 Fangoria launched the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards which originally celebrated horror films but later included television shows as well.

Unfortunately, the Fangoria magazine fell on hard times in recent years. It simply became too expensive to produce with lower revenues from advertisers. The release of new issues was especially sporadic last year though the newest issue (#348) can be ordered. The website is active though.

If you happen to come across back issues of Fangoria, they are definitely worth checking out.
