The fine folks over at Lionsgate Films have released a couple of new trailers for the rebooted Hellboy film that will premiere later this year. The two trailers are labeled as “Red Band” and “Green Band”. You can watch the “Red Band” trailer below but let’s make on thing clear – it is considerably Not Safe For Work due to blood and language.
I must admit that I was not a fan of the first Hellboy trailer which was released late last year. Maybe I am just too much of a Ron Perlman fan but David Harbour’s take on the big red guy just didn’t speak to me. This time around I find myself feeling much more respective about the film franchise reboot after watching the Hellboy “Red Band” trailer. Then again, I am not much of a fan of mainstream comic book films and much prefer the more offbeat and strange stories like this one.
The new film is directed by Neil Marshall. You may have seen his directorial work in Game of Thrones. It looks like the basics of Hellboy’s story are in place. He was summoned by the Nazis during World War II but ultimately goes on to work for the United States government eliminating paranormal threats.
Speaking of paranormal threats, the big baddie for this film is Nimue – the Queen of Blood. From what I understand the plot borrows elements from several classic Hellboy story arcs including The Wild Hunt and The Storm and the Fury. Nimue’s plan is a familiar one – she wants to destroy the world as we know it so her ideal kingdom can rise in its place. The trailer doe show her attempting to appeal to Hellboy’s demonic nature by asking why he fights to protect those who hate and fear him. With all of that said, the film has an uphill battle to fight before it will gain the respect of Ron Perlman’s fanbase.
Hellboy will premiere on April 12th, 2019.
