Previously, I talked about Alien: Isolation for The Witching Hour. Tonight, we’re going to talk about another incredible horror game: Capcom’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Released on January 24th, 2017, almost five years after the action-heavy Resident Evil 6, this game is a return to horror and a return to form for the series.
With horror, gore and heart attack-inducing scares, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard set a new bar for the series. Resident Evil has always been a much-loved horror franchise but with how Resident Evil 7: Biohazard turned out and how the Resident Evil 2 remake is looking we can feel assured the best is yet to come. This game really sets the atmosphere of walking into a horror movie. Entering the farm house and figuring out everything to do with that area has provided some of the most intense gaming moments I’ve experienced. Hearing the foot steps, creaks and groans of the house, not knowing if or when the enemy may pop out of nowhere to kill you.
This is especially amplified of course by wearing a headset and I had to take it off a few times, just to make sure it was the game and not someone in my house I heard walking. Your journey for survival on the farmland and dealing with the Baker family gave the game an ever-present feeling of anxiety.
Audio plays a major role in the success of the atmosphere for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, as it does with many games. I will always remember hearing the footsteps of Jack Baker, the father of the Baker family, constantly moving around the farmhouse. I would be afraid to open certain doors, thinking he may be right behind that door. Inducing small doses of fear over a long period of time, seems to be a Resident Evil recipe.
The visual aspect is another phenomenal reason as to why this game stands out so heavily within the series. Using the brand new “RE Engine” built from the ground-up, Capcom pushed Resident Evil to another level. It’s a graphically stunning showcase for what they can do, and I’m really excited to see how it turns out for Resident Evil 2.
I can’t stress enough that with October in full swing and Halloween around the corner, no time is better than now to play this wonderful horror game. This is a true, stand out first-person horror adventure that will keep you on your toes from start to finish. Are you up to the task of escaping the Baker family?
