One of the crown jewels in Sony’s portfolio of PlayStation exclusives would undoubtedly be The Last of Us franchise. After the official announcement of The Last of Us 2, fans have been clamoring for Sony to reveal the game’s release date? Would it be available on the PlayStation 4 or would it be for the upcoming PS5? Now we know the release window for the game thanks to an inadvertent leak by Ashley Johnson – the voice actress for Ellie.
During an interview with Critical Roll, Ashley Johnson was asked when The Last of Us 2 would be released. While we cannot actually hear her complete statement, it sounds very much like she said, “February”. She is then cut off – either she realized she was not supposed to announce that release date or somebody associated with the show kept her from finishing the statement.
That does not seem like much to go on but industry analyst Daniel Ahmad – also known as ZhugeEX – confirmed on ResetEra that Sony was targeting a February release date. Jason Schreier of Kotaku has also expressed his belief that
Looks like Death Stranding is about to get announced for a November release. The Last of Us 2 was also planned for fall 2019 but I actually just heard it got bumped to early 2020, possibly February? Either way, wild final year for PS4 https://t.co/wh6kimA73b

A release date has never been officially announced for the game but a 2020 release makes sense. It would help to maintain the PS4’s sales in the months leading up the release of the PS5 console next winter. The PS5 is said to be backwards compatible with the PS4 so The Last of Us 2 would be a fine candidate for a holiday 2020 promotion to convince people to buy the new console.
