It’s been a little over 10 years since the Xbox 360 launched, the console was what officially showed the world that Microsoft was series about gaming and it changed gaming as we knew it. It shaped the identity of that generation and some of the trends it created are still going on to this day; needless to say it was one of the most influential consoles ever. But all good things must come to an end, Microsoft has announced today that production of the Xbox 360 is coming to an end.
Xbox head, Phil Spencer, left a pretty emotional message about this over on Xbox Wire. I’d highly suggest reading it, it’s a great read and he included some important information on the subject; this includes Xbox Live still running on the 360, Xbox 360 games still being available for purchase in retail stores, among several other things. Microsoft may not be making any new Xbox 360s, but they’re supporting it!
Though, it should be expected that Microsoft will completely stop support of the console in the coming years as more and more people to the current generation of consoles. It will truly be a sad time when the 360’s Xbox Live comes to an end, I’m sure a couple people will get in some great sessions of Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 before it all ends. But in the meantime, enjoy your 360s while Xbox Live is still up and running!
