This weekend the over marketed movie Suicide Squad finally made it’s way to theaters. The movie has been critically panned as one of the worst reviewed movies of 2016. Most people didn’t really care about those reviews since this movie destroyed the August box office.
Suicide Squad has opened with a record breaking $135 million in August. Guardians of the Galaxy originally held the record with $94 million way back in 2014. Suicide Squad took the largest opening day in August ( $65.2 million) and Thursday night preview with $20.5 million. Jason Bourne pulled in another $22.7 million bringing the total gross to $195 million. This does include the international totals as well.
Weekend Top Five
- Suicide Squad $135 million
- Jason Bourne $22.7 million
- Bad Moms $14 million
- Secret Life of Pets $11.5 million
- Star Trek Beyond $10 million
The other movie that opened this weekend Nine Lives bombed with $6 million in its first weekend. The only other movie that really made a splash was Bad Moms. Bad Moms continues to make it in the box office. It’s budget was only $20 million; this film has grossed over $50 million. I haven’t had a chance to watch Suicide Squad this weekend. With an insane work week over I just didn’t have the energy to sit through any movie. The good news is that some of our people here at TICGN did watch the movie, Christian Reyes even wrote a review which you can read here.
Don’t expect much from the rest of the month of August. Someone thought it was a great idea to remake Ben-Hur. The Squad should stay at the top for the next few weeks. It just doesn’t seem like the movie will be in the top five of 2016.
Sometimes in my life it has become difficult not to gloat when I know I was right. Last week I do believe I said that Suicide Squad would destroy any competition at the box office. I just didn’t realize the movie would break some records. Don’t forget to leave let us know how you felt about this weekends movies. Just comment down below.
