We have never discovered the exact details of the agreement between Marvel and Sony that allowed Spider-Man to appear in the MCU. Thankfully a deal was struck though because seeing him appear in Civil War was a great moment that fans had been waiting for years to see. Sony have not rested on their laurels though and are allegedly working on not only a Venom film but a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie too. This makes sense in a way since Spider-Man has arguably the best rogue gallery of all the major heroes. This news has thrown up questions about how long Spidey will be sticking around in the MCU for.
New details from The Hollywood Reporter’s chat with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige have revealed a number of interesting things about the future of Spidey in the MCU, and Marvel’s relationship with Sony in general.
First and most importantly is that Spider-Man will make an appearance in Avengers 4. This means that Tom Holland’s webslinger will be appearing in 5 movies in the MCU. It began with Civil War and will include July’s Spider-Man: Homecoming as well as its sequel (slated for 2019) and the two Avengers movies. Feige stated ominously, “That’s as far as it goes for now.” It seems likely that Sony and Marvel will come together in the near future to discuss exactly what is going to happen with Spider-Man post 2019.
Feige also cleared up that Marvel have no involvement in the Spider-Man spin-off movies currently in development. What exactly Sony’s plan is with these new movies is anybody’s guess. Will they drag Tom Holland’s Spidey back in order to create a new Sony universe with these characters? Won’t that be confusing? Or will they strive on without Spider-Man? The former certainly seems more likely given the drawing power of Spidey, but it’s not an ideal situation. We will just have to wait and see. Sony made big strides in the superhero genre with their early Spider-Man movies but have fallen behind Marvel, DC and Fox in recent years. So it would take something special for them to challenge once more. No doubt it won’t stop them from trying to milk their cash-cow for as long as possible.
Spider-Man Homecoming hits theatres on July 7th.
