Sony: It’s Necessary To Have Next-Gen Hardware

The next generation of console hardware, from both Microsoft and Sony, is rapidly closing in. Today, some comments from Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida further indicate that the next PlayStation is likely not too many years away. No, the PlayStation 5 has not been officially revealed but Sony is willing to admit they’re working on next-generation console.

Sony: It’s Necessary To Have Next-Gen Hardware:

Talking to the Financial Times (subscription required to read) Kenichiro Yoshida says that “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.”

The Financial Times also indicates that according to their sources, the next PlayStation console “might not represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would be similar.”

This makes sense, considering that both the Xbox One and the PS4 use x64-based architecture, instead of custom designs like the Cell processor in the PS3. Expanding on the design for current-generation hardware simply makes the most sense from an engineering standpoint.

Obviously, this is not an official announcement for a new console but the fact that Sony is willing to make a statement like this suggests new hardware can’t be way too far away. With no PSX happening this year, we’ll have to wait and see what 2019 brings for PlayStation.
