We have known for quite some time that SNES games would eventually be playable on Nintendo’s hybrid console through a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. If you are an old school Nintendo fan then you had better buckle up because they will be available on the Switch as early as tomorrow according to a recent announcement from today’s Nintendo Direct.
Unfortunately, there will not be an optiom to purchase any of these games through a Virtual Console service. If you want to play these classic titles on your Switch then the only official way to do so would be through a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. There will be 20 games available when the service launches this week and more titles will be added in the future. Here is a list of SNES games that will be available this week:
A lot of classic titles are included from the get-go and there are even a couple of surprises. Was there a massive consumer push for Stunt Race FX to be playable on modern hardware? In any case, this is the first time that game will officially be available on another system. We can only hope that gems such as Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger make their way to the service.
All games will babe access to the Rewind feature at launch. Multiplayer titles can be played locally with JoyCon controllers and online support will be included. Strangely, there was no mention of save state support. Let’s hope that feature will be avaiable.
If you really want to rock out with SNES gamws on your Switch then you can also buy this wireless SNES style controller for $29.99 USD from Nintendo’s website. It can be charged via USB-C cable but otherwise feels very similar to the old SNES controllers of years past.
The SNES games app will be available for Nintendo Switch on Thursday, September 5th. That’s for North American gamers. Those of you who live on the other side of the puddle will have to wait until Friday.
