Sea of Thieves First Week Numbers Announced

Craig Duncan, the Studio Head of Rare, provided some interesting updates for players today. In this post on Xbox Wire, he thanked players for their support of Sea of Thieves during its launch week. While they’d already confirmed over one million unique players on launch day, the number of gamers who have played Sea of Thieves is now over two million. Additionally, Sea of Thieves is now the fastest-selling first-party Microsoft Studios IP this generation. It’s also the best-selling first-party IP on Windows 10. Aaron Greenberg, Xbox Head of Marketing, clarified on Twitter that the fastest-selling new IP statistic does not include players trying the game through Game Pass:

Other interesting statistics from Sea of Thieves first week numbers:
  • Over 100,000 players have streamed Sea of Thieves since launch
  • The above statistic resulted in 10 million watched hours of gameplay
  • Over 500,000 new Xbox Live friendships have taken place
  • Over 400,000 players have joined a club to find Sea of Thieves players
Craig also addresses the remaining bugs and server issues:

We know the response has led to some scale challenges and exposed some bugs we have addressed and will continue to address. Please know that the team at Rare is working hard to tackle any player-impacting issues and this is our number one priority.

Yesterday, we released our first client update to address some of these fixes, in addition to the background improvements we are making to our services. Check out the latest developer update Executive Producer Joe Neate and I did earlier, and stay tuned to www.seaofthieves.com for continued updates.

Finally, he finishes by thanking players and confirming a roadmap will be shared soon:

We have been listening to your feedback, so please stay tuned for an upcoming update where we will talk about what we have heard from the community and how Sea of Thieves will evolve based on our vision and player feedback.

We are excited and humbled to see the community grow around the game and we thank you again for being part of our crew!

It’s fantastic to see Rare and Microsoft enjoying this kind of success. A new IP is a risky venture but so far it seems to be paying off. If you’d like to learn more about Sea of Thieves, feel free to check out my review here.
