The world is about to be in a frenzy of Star Wars news as Star Wars Celebration quickly approaches. Little bits and details are already starting to leak out about the franchise’s future. One such rumor is that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic may be returning. Game journalist/sleuth, Liam Robertson, is claiming that Bioware is working on a new entry in the series.
Robertson had this to say on his podcast:
“I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future,” … “What they’re currently working on right now—and I have this on good authority—is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic. I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now. I don’t really know how that game’ll end up,” he said. “I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.”
It sounds like the game isn’t a direct remake. It might be remade to fit into the new Star Wars canon:
“I think this is sort of like wiping the slate clean. I think this is going to embrace the new Star Wars universe lore because Knights of the Old Republic was sort of just pushed into the expanded universe, the Legends canon of Star Wars.”
This isn’t the only instance of a Knights of the Old Republic rumor popping up recently. Cinelinx reported a similar rumor back in September. They said that three sources told them an Old Republic remake/remaster was coming. One of said sources confirmed to Cinelinx that Star Wars: Battlefront was getting Rogue One DLC. That has since proven to be true, giving credibility to the source. Cinelinx says that the new game was put on the back burner for several reasons. Perhaps things have begun to pick up speed, which is why Robertson is now reporting on this?
Knights of the Old Republic was released in 2003 to critical acclaim, going on to become one of the most beloved games of all-time. It was followed by a sequel in 2004 and a MMO spin-off in 2011. The series was made “non-canon”, along with the rest of the old “expanded universe”, back in 2013. Still, elements of the series have persisted in the years since. This includes an appearance from Darth Bane in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and several pieces of Darth Revan merchandise recently. Clearly some people at Lucasfilm still love the series.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains a beloved classic to this day. If a new game in the series is indeed coming, it will be met with massive hype. Perhaps the series’ long awaited revival will be announced this weekend at Star Wars Celebration?
