Preview: Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem – A Hack and Slash With Potential

At the end of last month, WOLCEN Studio released the Early Access version of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem on Steam. An RPG adventure Hack and Slash, if you’re a fan of Diablo, Path of Exile, and similar games, this is one you might want to keep your eye on. However, if you do grab it in early access, make sure to be aware that this game still has a lot of work to do, even for an early access version. But, from my first impressions, you’ll have plenty to look forward to once the kinks are worked out.

Wolcen, although customization is not yet available, follows your story as you learn the meaning of your powers, learn to control them, and meet the Brothers. In the future, you will have the ability to build a house, challenge others, join the online version, and more.

From the beginning, the graphics are absolutely gorgeous. Even if you have to use “low” settings, they’re impressive. The attacks are a lot of fun and fit just about any play style and preference. I personally chose to go down the Wizard tree, but you are not restricted to one class. Controls are simple and easy to use. I picked everything up easily and had no problem dispatching the hordes of zombies with my lightning bolts. It was also satisfying to freeze and crush them with a melee attack. Overall, the game itself was satisfying and one I’ll be returning to play after this preview is published.

However, I mentioned earlier: this game does have a lot of work to do. I ran into quite a few bugs. Most were minor things, like characters walking when they weren’t supposed to, NPCs spasming, and audio dropping from time to time. Another issue was the dialogue, which I definitely hope is cleaned up in the near future. There was a LOT of grammatical errors, run on sentences, and other mistakes throughout the storyline and, for me, it was a huge distraction from the story.

Probably the biggest complaint though would have to be the random spikes in lag. For no reason at all, FPS would drop through the floor to the point I had to look away or risk getting a headache. I noticed this is a trend in other comments about the game, so I fully expect them to correct this issue and others in the near future.

Wolcen

The creators of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem are regularly rolling out updates for the game to improve the performance, including one yesterday. Wolcen definitely has tons of potential and it will be exciting to follow the progress. It could definitely be a big hit after corrections to the bugs/lag issues and an improved story line for the tutorial. If these type of games interest you, I would absolutely recommend checking it out on Steam to see what it’s all about. You can also check out the website or their trailer on Youtube.
