Obsidian Entertainment has a long history of developing role-playing games, from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords to Pillars of Eternity 2. At X018, it was announced that they had been acquired by Xbox Game Studios (then Microsoft Studios). During The Game Awards 2018, their newest project was revealed: The Outer Worlds.
In an interview with Game Informer, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart talked about why Microsoft acquired Obsidian, the ideas behind The Outer Worlds, and more. They also touched on the number of teams currently active at Obsidian Entertainment.
When asked by Game Informer if Obsidian had three teams, Feargus Urquhart said “Three-ish, yea. We have The Outer Worlds team, which is the majority of our development, we still have a small group of people that are finishing up in Pillars of Eternity and then we have two other teams that are starting things up.”
With the majority of the studio working on The Outer Worlds and what is presumably a skeleton crew wrapping up work on Pillars of Eternity 2, it sounds like the studio has two new projects that are beginning development. During a talk at the University of California Riverside, we reported that Obsidian Entertainment had begun work on a new game in Unreal Engine 4. This unannounced project is likely one of the two teams Feargus has mentioned.
