NPD: Nintendo sweeps North America with hardware, software sales

A certain plumber must be smiling all the way to the bank after reading the NPD report for August 2019. The Nintendo Switch was the best selling hardware for that month and retains its title as the best selling video game console of 2019. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One saw another drop in sales during the same month.

In fact, overall consoles were down year-on-year by a considerable margin. “Hardware spending in August 2019 fell 22 percent when compared to a year ago, to $167 million,” noted analyst Mat Piscatella. “Year-to-date hardware spending has declined 21 percent versus [one] year ago, to $1.6 billion.”

The list of best selling video gammes in August 2019 according to NPD read like a list of Nintendo exclusives padded with mainstays for the other consoles like Grand Theft Auto V and the latest iteration of EA’s football series, Madden 20.
