No Xbox Mixed Reality Presence At E3 This Year

Those of you who were worried that Microsoft’s E3 press conference would be bogged down by mixed reality reveals can breathe a little easier. There are no plans to show mixed reality headsets or games at E3 this year according to Polygon.

“Windows has been the birthplace of a variety of technologies, and we believe this will hold for mixed reality too. Given the efforts we have underway on Windows for mixed reality, and our belief that console VR should be wireless, right now we are focused on developing mixed reality experiences for the PC, not on the console” said Alex Kipman, Technical Fellow for Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group.

This makes a lot of sense as Microsoft has been clear that there would be no mixed reality software for the upcoming Scorpio console until 2018. Mixed Reality devkits began shipping to select developers in March of this year and include Acer’s headset though there are several hardware partners including Lenovo, Dell and HP which will offer their own headsets at varying price points next year.

That leaves Scorpio and Microsoft’s upcoming games lineup to carry the day at E3. This year’s E3 conference is critical for Microsoft who has been criticized for their lackluster exclusive lineup during the first half of 2017. Expect the official name for the Project Scorpio as well as the introductory price point.
