No New Assassin’s Creed in 2016, Watch Dogs 2 To Possibly Replace It

Assassin’s Creed has been a yearly released franchise ever since 2009, but it looks like 2016 will be the series’s first break in a long time. Ubisoft took to their official blog to announce that there will be no Assassin’s Creed game this year.

They stated that: “This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise. We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.”

This is exciting as many fans of the series have felt that Assassin’s Creed has become stale and seriously needed an update; it looks like Ubisoft has listened to the criticism and is working on reinventing the franchise before it withers out. Though, there will still be a major piece of Assassin goodness this year in the form of the upcoming movie set to be released in December.

Ubisoft has also announced in their financial results that the next Watch_Dogs game will come out before March 2017. Perhaps Watch_Dogs 2 will be Ubisoft’s big fall game this year instead of Assassin’s Creed?

This new, confirmed information from Ubisoft fits inline with a recent leak that stated these things would happen. The rumor stated that the next Assassin’s Creed will take place in Egypt with its gameplay being heavily inspired by The Witcher 3. It also said that Watch_Dogs 2 will take place in San Francisco. It seems incredibly likely that these tidbits are true given the fact that there is no Assassin’s Creed this year and that Watch_Dogs is coming instead.
