Netflix has hired screenwriter Anna Klassen to rewrite the script for Dorothy & Alice, a story that brings Dorothy Gale from the Oz tales and Alice Liddel from Alice in Wonderland. You can see the official announcement via Klassen’s official Twitter account below:
The Cheshire Cat is out of the bag: I’m writing DOROTHY & ALICE for @Netflix, a fantasy adventure epic. I grew up reading these books & this project has been endlessly fun to craft – to reinvent treasured characters and explore the worlds I wanted to inhabit as a kid. pic.twitter.com/oaythAz4ae

Dorothy & Alice is a story that focuses on the close friendship between these titular characters from two of the most highly regarded tales in literature. Netflix acquired the rights to the project with the hope that it could be turned into a lucrative franchise for the content provider.
One version of the script that has already been written features Dorothy Gale plagued by dreams of Oz being destroyed. She is sent to a home for troubled young people where she meets Alice. The two girls embark on a quest to not only save the fantastical worlds of imagination but to also save the real world. This version of the script is reportedly not quite up to par. Netflix reportedly wishes for the concept to go in a different direction but there is currently no indication as to where Klassen will take these characters.
Klassen is an interesting choice for a screenwriter position on Dorothy & Alice as she began as a reporter for the entertainment industry. She used to write for The Daily Beast and Buzzfeed Klassen rose to fame after writing an unofficial biography of J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books.
