Several years ago Disney came up with a solution that has plagued those of us who buy movies digitally for years – over time our collection became spread out over several different platforms. I myself have movies on iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, Amazon Video and Xbox. Disney’s solution was elegantly simple. By creating a Disney Movies Anywhere account and linking them to various platforms, you can purchase a movie on one and watch it on any of them. For example, purchasing a Disney movie on Google Play would let you watch it on Amazon Instant Video or iTunes so long as your accounts were connected.
The service was magnificent and most importantly, it simply worked. Now studios such as Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., Fox and Universal have joined Disney and the service has been rebranded as Movies Anywhere.
The process is very simple. Simply go to the Movies Anywhere website and create an account. You’ll be prompted to connect to your iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Instant Video and Vudu accounts. Every account you connect to will import your purchases and you will be able to watch any of your collected movies from these studios on any of these platforms. When I went through the process I found that 76 of my movies that were scattered across several services were now unified and watchable on any of them.
This will make it much easier to watch your various movies on your current and future devices. For example, you may have an iPhone now but what if you get a Kindle Fire tablet for Christmas? You’ll be able to watch movies from either platform on the other.
