Well, that was a surprise.
An update to the much beloved Star Wars: Empire At War returns the long lost online multiplayer functionality. Empire at War is an RTS game that beautifully depicts the Star Wars universe and features iconic planets from the movies. Battles are not limited to foot soldiers and ground vehicles either. Air support and even space battles comprise a major portion of the game. Even the Death Star can be used in battle.
Star Wars: Empire at War was originally released in 2006 and long remained a fan favorite. Unfortunately, the forces of the Dark Side shut obliterated the online multiplayer portion when Gamespy shut down.
Today represents a new hope as Disney and Petroglyph released an update to the Steam version of Empire at War that restores online multiplayer to the game and the Forces of Corruption expansion. The update also includes Steamworks mod support and some graphic and stability improvements.
The game is currently on sale for 50% off through Steam.
Say what you will about Disney’s stewardship of the Star Wars franchise but the return of the Jedi online multiplayer is a plus in my book.
Now if you’ll excuse me, my squadron of speeders awaits.
