Melissa McCarthy could play Ursula in live action The Little Mermaid

Disney is showing every sign that they are going to continue producing live action versions of their popular animated movies and a remake of The Little Mermaid is on the horizon. It seems that Disney is negotiating with Melissa McCarthy to play as the villainous Ursula in the live action adaptation according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. They have already tapped Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) to direct the movie.

Whether you love them or hate them, these live action remakes are big money for Disney. For the sake of context, Aladdin has already cleared over $800 million at the box office and is the highest grossing film of Will Smith’s acting career.

The movie is only now in preproduction and will not be in theaters for a very long time. Disney has not even announced a possible release date yet. However, McCarthy can be seen relatively soon in The Kitchen and Superintelligence.

Disney has already released five films this year. Even if you count Dumbo as a box office bomb, the House of Mouse has taken about a third of ticket sales in the United States during the first half of 2019 with over $2 billion in revenue. The next live action Disney flick will be The Lion King which will be released in July.
