Since it was announced a little over three months ago that Marvel would be bringing a New Warriors TV show to Freeform, all the talk has been about casting. Specifically, all the talk has been about the casting for fan-favourite Squirrel Girl. It has now been announced that Milana Vayntrub has been cast as the young adult superhero.
Fans threw numerous names into the hat for who could play the squirrel-based hero. Anna Kendrick was a name that has been thrown up a lot in discussions prior to this, but it was always clear she is too big of a name for the show. There was also a big personal push from one of the breakout stars of Stranger Things, Shannon Purser, who played Barb on the hit Netflix show. Freeform and Marvel however found their Squirrel Girl in Vayntrub. She can be seen on This Is Us at the moment and is also famous for her role as Lily on the AT&T adverts in America. Her ability to mix charming and goofy has led many fans to take to Twitter to react positively to the choice.
Squirrel Girl may be the favourite, but she’s not the only character in the show, and there is a lot of other casting news too. Derek Theler of Baby Daddy fame will be the show’s Mister Immortal, Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) is Night Thrasher, and Calum Worthy is Speedball. Rounding out the cast are Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii.
Showrunner and executive producer Kevin Biegel had this to say about the cast:
“I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It’ll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them.”
Marvel’s New Warriors will be a comedy series consisting of 10 thirty minute episodes. It will join the previously announced Cloak and Dagger show on Freeform. Both are expected to be released sometime next year.
