With the shoddy nature of 2015’s Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash and sports compilation Mario Sports Superstars having launched on the Nintendo 3DS in 2016, some may be under the assumption that Nintendo is through with individual sports titles starring their beloved mascot. However, the very recent announcement of Mario Tennis Aces for Nintendo Switch has proven that this is far from the truth.
Announced in the latest Nintendo Direct Mini, Mario Tennis Aces aims to spice up the series by emphasizing not only skill-based play mechanics, but also a Story mode – the first since the Game Boy Advance’s Mario Tennis: Power Tour (or Mario Power Tennis as known outside the US). This is also the first console Mario Tennis game to feature a Story mode at all.
While any specific details of the Story mode are still under wraps, the reveal trailer from the Direct showcases the traditional tennis gameplay and multiple courts demonstrating matches and missions alike. You can expect Mario Tennis Aces to arrive on the Nintendo Switch this spring. It seems destined to be a must-have for any tennis-loving Switch owner, and is sure to be a big improvement over the previous entries in the series.
