Well it is that time of the month again, the NPD group has announced the sales numbers for both software and hardware. Without further delay, let’s dive into these numbers. Here’s the rundown for the March 2018 NPD numbers.
The gaming industry as a whole by the numbers:
- Total: $1.316 billion (down 11 percent from $1.478 billion in March 2017)
- Hardware: $331 million (down 32 percent from $485 million)
- PC and console software: $613 million (down 10 percent from $682 million)

Hardware Numbers:
- Hardware spending in March 2018 declined 32 percent when compared to a year ago, to $331 million.
- For the 2018 year to date period, hardware spending has increased 13 percent to $925 million, driven by growth in Xbox One spending. This is the highest year to date total achieved since 2014.
- Sony’s PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console hardware platform in March and remains the best-selling console hardware platform year to date.
- The Nintendo Switch 32GB with Neon Red/Blue Joy-Con is the best-selling hardware item of both March as well as 2018 year to date.
What this means in layman’s terms is that the PS4 was the best selling console in March, with the Nintendo Switch 32GB bundle being the best selling individual SKU.
Now onto the exciting stuff which is software. Far Cry 5 takes the top spot selling the most copies of any title of 2018, taking the crown from Monster Hunter: World. Sea of Thieves is a success for Rare as it takes the number two spot in software and is the 8th best selling game of 2018. This is great news for the developers at Rare and hopefully, we will see more content coming down the pipeline to support these numbers.
