Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Zombieland 2: Double Tap both had a healthy opening weekend even if they were supposed to preform better. Given that these two movies still had to deal with the Joker, it seems that October will a great month for theaters. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opened with $36 million at number one, while Zombieland 2: Double Tap opened at number three with $26.7 million. The Addams Family came in fourth with $16 million as that film sits at $56 million domestically.
Joker has passed $700 million worldwide as it now sits at $737 million. This movie needs a little over $100 million to top Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. It has already topped Justice League and Man of Steel. These new DC movies have been making more money and are getting better reviews from the critics than the first phase of movies. It seems that Warner Bros doesn’t need to make the unified universe that Marvel has.
Weekend Top Three
3. Zombieland 2: Double Tap $26.7 million
2. Joker $29 million
1. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil $36 million
Next weekend three movies will be released that have no chance of making it into the top three. Black and Blue, Countdown, and The Current War: Directors Cut all come out in more than 2000 theaters. Given Joker is still popular and Halloween is so close, look for a surge from one of the spooky movies that have already been released. The month of November is looking promising with Frozen 2, Terminator: Dark Fate, Doctor Sleep, Midway, Harriet, Last Christmas, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood all coming out.
