Lumia Devices Will Soon Run Windows 10 64-Bit Operating System

One curious shortcoming of Windows 10 phones is the fact that they run a 32-Bit version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system which has drastically limited their functionality. That is soon going to change according to a well hidden revelation that Microsoft buried within a tribute to one of their engineers, Dave Cutler.

“[H]e completed one of his “most gratifying pieces of work” at Microsoft when, partnering with AMD, he helped develop the AMD64 architecture (64-bit extensions to the 32-bit x86 architecture) and led the effort to ship the first two x64 64-bit Windows systems (workstation and server). At the time, some questioned why Microsoft developed a 64-bit system; today most computers are 64-bit systems and even our phones will soon have a 64-bit operating system.”

Several Qualcomm SnapDragon mobile processors are already capable of supporting 64-bit operating systems but the feature has been under-utilized. A phone that runs a 64-bit OS will be capable of utilizing 4GB of RAM which in turn leads to theoretically more robust apps that can be run on the device. This could also result in x86 apps running on Windows 10 phones via the Continuum feature.

This capability should begin to roll out in June when the Windows 10 Redstone update is scheduled to ship. This may well be an important step to Phil Spencer’s vision of purchasing a single game and being able to play it wherever you are.
