How to Train Your Dragon 3 Takes the Crown for a Second Weekend

Last weekend I was unable to cover the top grossing movies at the box office. The biggest movie last week was of course How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. That movie has now taken the top spot for a second weekend in a row. It narrowly defeated Tyler Perry’s ‘Madea Family Funeral’. Don’t expect either of these movies to be in the top spot next weekend because Captain Marvel will be coming out on the 8th.

Thankfully, movie studios don’t rely just on the domestic box office to make their money back anymore. Alita: Battle Angel would have been considered a failure given it has only grossed $72 million domestically so far. In the worldwide box office, the movie has grossed over $278 million. The total right now for this film is sitting at a respectable $350 million worldwide. It’s safe to say that a sequel could be in the cards. The top movie in the world at the moment is actually not from the golden land of Hollywood. The Wandering Earth is sitting at $655 million worldwide with only $5 million coming from the domestic market. The movie is easily on pace to break all sorts of records overseas. Look for it to be one of the first movies to break that billion dollar mark.

Weekend Top Three

3. Alita: Battle Angel $7 million

2. Tyler Perrys A Madea Family Funeral $27 million

1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World $30 million

Like I said above,Captain Marvel is coming out this weekend. The next movie in the Marvel juggernaut comes to us a few months before the release of Avengers: Endgame. A second trailer was released this past week for the upcoming X-Men movie Dark Phoenix. The trailer makes me happy that these characters will be returning home. That said, I can’t help but feel that this will be one of the biggest bombs of the year.
