2018’s Aquaman movie director, James Wan, has recently opened up to MTV News about what he sees as the potential problems with the film, as well as what he is most excited for. While out promoting The Conjuring 2 at Cinema Con, Wan explained that a big part of the character for him is, in fact, the often comedic way people view the King of Atlantis. Even in the comics the more far fetched elements of Arthur Curry’s character are sources of amusement for those around him. Well, until he does something badass like this:
Wan had this to say: “As we all know, Aquaman is somewhat the butt of the joke in the superhero world. There’s something cool about that. I love the idea of being the underdog, coming in with a take on this underdog character and completely blow people’s expectations away. Like, ’Oh, you thought he was going to be a wimpy character? No no no.’ It’s going to be so cool.”
Of course, nowadays comicbook movie directors also have to take into account the wider universe in which their films take place and Aquaman will be no exception. Audiences caught their first glimpse of Arthur Curry in Batman v.s Superman: Dawn of Justice during his brief cameo swimming out of an abandoned ship. Wan had this to say about Zack Snyder’s upcoming crossover movie Justice League.
“There’s Justice League that happens before it, so I have to be respectful to that,” Wan said. “But in a lot of ways… it’s a continuation but there are origin elements as well — and that’s the story that I’m excited to tell.”
Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, will release in 2018 but you can see him in action first in next year’s Justice League part 1. Are you looking forward to seeing the King of Atlantis on the silver screen? What was your favourite Aquaman comic? Let us know in the comments below!
