Horizon Zero Dawn Delayed

Sony and Guerrilla Games have released a new trailer for their new IP Horizon Zero Dawn today. In it the main protagonist has been revealed to be named Aloy. Nothing is known about her outside of that, aside from her having mysterious origins and that she is searching for where she truly belongs. The biggest revelation however is the games released date being pushed from Fall of 2016 to Feb 28, 2017. Hermen Hulst, Managing Director at Guerrilla Games, took to the PlayStation blog and had this to say about the delay:

As you can see in the trailer, we’ve decided to push the release date for Horizon Zero Dawn to February 28, 2017. It wasn’t an easy choice to make; we know many of you have been anxious to play the game since we first announced it. However, we also want to ensure that Horizon Zero Dawn lives up to the visuals and gameplay quality that our games are known for. The new date affords us the extra time required to deliver fully on our ambitious vision for Horizon Zero Dawn.

While the delay for Horizon Zero Dawn was rumored (and for some expected), there was still hope the game would come out this year as promised. It turns out not to be the case which is disappointing. The new trailer looks stunning. I don’t know how much of it is actual gameplay or in game CGI, but if that’s what we can expect or close to what can be expected in the final product. The wait may turn out to be worth it. It could also be better for the game to release in the beginning of next year; especially since it is a new IP. Most tend to get lost in the Fall when arriving next to some of the more established franchises. I don’t want another Sunset Overdrive situation. Where the sequel won’t get made because of sales despite being a great game. Plus extra time to get everything nice and polished is always a good thing.

So what do you guys think of the delay? Is it for the best or do Sony first party studios just need to get their act together (seriously Sony this is at least the fourth game to be delayed this gen)? Let me know in the comments and also if you haven’t yet seen the trailer you can check it below.
