Gran Turismo Sport Reaches 5 Million Players

Polyphony Digital’s latest entry, Gran Turismo Sport, may have had a divisive launch the racing game has managed to build a sizable community of players. Producer Kazunori Yamauchi took to Twitter to thank the fans and announce that over 5 million players have competed in the game. Check out the tweet below:

This means that Gran Turismo Sport is selling at a much faster pace than its predecessor, Gran Turismo 6, which sold over four million copies on PlayStation 3 over a span of five years. One of the most popular entries in the series was Gran Turismo 5 which sold well over ten million copies. For the sake of context, Gran Turismo Sport was released about nine months ago.

Gran Turismo Sport faced a substantial amount of criticism at launch – mainly due to its focus on eSport challenges. There were only three events available during the first week and little else to do beyond the driving school. Over the months Polyphony Digital launched new events and released substantial updates which gave the game much more content including vehicles, courses and new features.
