GameStop Now Publishes Games

GameStop has been selling other peoples’ games for years, but it seems like they’re finally making their own games as they just launched a publishing division. The new division is named GameTrust and is publishing some games from some big third party studios.

GameStop will be publishing games from Insomniac (Ratchet and Clank, Sunset Overdrive), Ready at Dawn (The Order: 1886), Tequila Works (Deadlight) and Frozenbyte (Trine). An impressive group of developers, these people could have gone to anyone so maybe it proves that GameStop is doing something special?

GameStop is claiming that they’re going about publishing from a less restrictive angle than other companies: “Unlike a traditional video game publisher, GameTrust is not part of the creative process,” GameStop says. “Instead, it is focusing on discovering creative and fun games from innovative independent developers that can benefit from GameStop’s expertise and retail channels to support marketing and connecting their games with a broader global audience.”

GameStop will heavily promote their games at their own stores, but they will offer them digitally on consoles and Steam. So if you absolutely hate GameStop for some weird reason, you won’t have to go into one of their stores to buy the game.

It makes sense that GameStop is doing this as most major chain stores offer products that their store exclusively makes; GameStop was the odd man out in not doing this.
