The Disney/Pixar animated movie Finding Dory has set a new record at the box office this weekend. The sequel to the 2003s hit Finding Nemo has had a great opening weekend with a massive haul of $136 million. This weekend sets the record for best opening for an animated movie.
It really was a big weekend for the box office compared to the last few weeks. Center Intelligence with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart made a modest $35 million in it’s first week. With domestic ticket sales dropping off at 72% for Warcraft it seems that the summer won’t have that many movies with returns over $500 million, except X-Men Apocalypse which finally crossed that mark. Given that some of those movies actually spend an extra amount on marketing it is always a challenge to make that money back. Movies like the Conjuring 2 can make a higher profit then those big blockbusters like Warcraft.
Weekend Estimates
- Finding Dory- $ 136 million
- Central Intelligence- $ 34.5 million
- The Conjuring 2- $15.5 million
- Now You See Me 2- $ 9.6 million
- Warcraft- $ 6.5 million
Thankfully for the movie market Finding Dory is poised to be another top movie from Disney. With Zootopia, Jungle Book, and Captain America: Civil War Disney has already become the most profitable studio this year. Even with expensive re-shoots the winter release of Star Wars: Rogue One is looking to do well at the theater.
