Electronic Arts reportedly cancels open-world Star Wars game

Electronic Arts has reportedly canceled the open-world Star Wars that was in development at the EA Vancouver studio. The news comes from Jason Schreier via Kotaku who reports that three people close to the project have confirmed its cancellation.

This Star Wars game was publicly announced way back in 2017 after Electronic Arts shuttered Visceral Games who was developing a single player linear game set within the iconic space opera franchise under the code name of “Ragtag”. That game was directed by Amy Henning of Uncharted fame. “It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design”, explained Patrick Söderlund who was Executive Vice President of EA Worldwide Studios at the time. “A development team from across EA Worldwide Studios will take over development of this game, led by a team from EA Vancouver that has already been working on the project.”

After the closure of Visceral Games the assets from Project Ragtag were taken by EA Vancouver for use in the open-world Star Wars game. This open-world game has been canceled as well though Kotaku reports that EA Vancouver may work on yet another Star Wars title in the near future.

All hope is not lost for fans like us. Respawn Entertainment has also been hard at work developing their own Star Wars title and it is still scheduled for release this year.
