E3 2018 Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus Impressions – Sacrifice in the Name of the Omnissiah

Another intriguing game that I took a look at during E3 2018 was the upcoming title Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus. Fittingly enough, it’s a turn-based game with quite a few role-playing elements. Being developed by Bulwark Studios and published by Kasedo Games, this title jumps into Warhammer lore, letting you take control of the powerful, mysteriously advanced Tech-Priests of the Imperium: the Adeptus Mechanicus. I’m interested by anything Warhammer-related that seems promising, so I met with some of the developers who showed me how customization works, how your squads function and more. Here’s my Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus impressions!

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus Impressions

Perhaps the most encouraging thing I saw overall was the level of care and passion for the world of Warhammer. It’s present everywhere, with subtle details that only franchise veterans might appreciate, though the game is built so as not to completely overwhelm newcomers. The story is being written by Ben Counter, who has penned many Warhammer 40,000 books and is well-suited to craft the branching narrative here. In Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, you are in charge of an expedition into a newly discovered world called Silva Tenebris. While there’s a truly impressive number of missions available, you can only choose a certain amount, so you’ll need to carefully peruse which of your goals to pursue, which will lead to different story paths and eventually different endings.

At the core of everything you do is your Tech-Priests, the backbone of your army. One of the great things about the tabletop game is customizing your figurines and I’m very happy to report that’s also the case here. While on board your Ark Mechanicus ( a vast imperial ship titled The Caestus Metalican) you can prepare your team for whatever may come, engage in research and carefully select missions. For each of your soldiers, you can choose their weapons, tools, consumables and skills, all appropriately named and pulled from the lore. There’s a truly insane level of customization available, with hundreds of different combinations for each individual Tech-Priest. In addition to the Tech-Priests, you’ll also have a variety of grunt-type units like Servitors to pad out your roster. These are far less effective troops whose main purpose is to serve as a meatshield and protect the Tech-Priests.

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus ImpressionsWhen you finish preparing and finally embark on a mission, your selected squad begin to explore all the different rooms as you watch on a holographic map in The Caestus Metalican. When your squad finally engages in combat (for example, against Necrons lurking in their labyrinthine constructs), then you’ll take direct control and the gameplay shifts to turn-based combat. If you have played games like XCOM then you’ll have a very good idea of how things go. As you might expect, a careful approach to strategy is key.

Now the combat is still being balanced at this stage of development and a lot of things aren’t finalized but obviously there’s a lot of variety, with different enemies that have different abilities. The more advanced the Necron warriors, the more special moves they have, such as using a Teleportation Matrix to move to the other side of the map.

I love strategy title and I love Warhammer, so it should come as no surprise that I’m very eager to see how this title turns out. From what I’ve seen, it definitely captures the dark tones and overall feel of Warhammer 40,000. With that said, even if you’re not a huge fan of Warhammer, there’s more than enough compelling gameplay mechanics here that I’d recommend strategy fans in general keep their eyes on it. Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus is currently scheduled to release sometime in 2018 on PC. We’ll keep you up to date on any official release date announcements or other big news and you can find more information on the official website right here.
