E3 2018 Spider-Man Impressions: A Web-Slinging Playground

During my time at E3 2018, I went hands-on with a very highly-anticipated title, Spider-Man. In this demo, I was given a quick tutorial and then set loose in the vast open city of New York. I swung around the environment, stopped some robbers and swung around some more. Eventually, a distress beacon indicated that a band was being robbed and I got a chance to fight a boss: the Shocker.

My friend PlayStation Brah recorded some gameplay, which you can check out here or below:

Now, here’s my Spider-Man impressions!

Spider-Man Impressions

Let’s get something out of the way right now: playing as Spider-Man feels awesome. Swinging from building to building is exhilarating, with a surprising layer of depth in how you can dash and how momentum carries you. It’s easy to pick up but difficult to fully figure out. Given that this game is being developed by Insomniac Games, the makers of Sunset Overdrive, it’s no real surprise that traversal is so great.

The combat is similarly superb; Spider-Man is fast and powerful, with fluid attacks that chain together into combos quite naturally. You’ve got a web wheel (that’s what I’m calling it anyways) that lets you choose between standard webbing and bombs. You can grab and swing car doors, snatch away enemy explosives and more.

The recreation of New York hasn’t come at a cost to detail though, as the city is vibrant and gorgeous to look at. It’s a packed city, with NPCs bustling around on the city streets. They aren’t devoid of personality either: if a fight breaks out they’ll run in terror, swing by low to the ground and they might cheer you on. All of this adds a sense of immersion and frankly, downright wonder to the experience.

After years of subpar titles, fans who have been hoping for an excellent Spider-Man game have a lot to look forward here. Spider-Man releases on September 7th, 2018 for the PlayStation 4.
