Some big news has broken thanks to a report from Deadline: Disney has rehired James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. According to Deadline, the change came about as a result of Alan Horn, Chairman at Walt Disney Studios, talking with James Gunn several times and reviewing his public apology.
In July 2018, the future plans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) took a hit as James Gunn, writer and director of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, was fired. The firing came directly from Disney after extremely unsavory tweets made by James resurfaced on Twitter. Since then, the move has been heavily contested, with several of the actors and actresses in the films, such as Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), speaking out on James’ behalf.
According to Borys Kit from The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn will still direct The Suicide Squad before shifting his attention to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The third Guardians film has been pushed back in Phase 4 of the MCU, so it’ll be interesting to see where things end up now that Disney has rehired James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Right now, all eyes are on Avengers: Endgame, which releases in theaters on April 26th, 2019.
