Deadpool Movie Review

You can see why Ryan Reynolds was pushing this movie for the past 11 years.

Deadpool is fantastic, from the opening credits of ‘from the studio that brought you NOT The Avengers’ and ‘produced by Asshats’ I was completely sold by the type of humor this movie was going for.

For those who don’t know about the merc with a mouth (where have you been?) he is Wade Wilson, a mercenary for hire who falls in love and after getting engaged finds out he has cancer in his liver, kidneys, lungs and brain. He is then approached by a secret organization promising a cure for his ailments. They deliver but at a cost, he is scared heavily from head to toe but now has ultra fast regenerative healing. The movie is then about how Wade, now Deadpool, is hunting down those who done him wrong and save his girl… while constantly making jokes and talking to the audience.

The 4th wall is non-existent here and it’s all the better for it, almost every joke hits the mark perfectly especially the ones referencing real life and the X-Men. It’s not often a movie trying so hard to make you laugh actually succeeds. I’m not sure if this movie will be as funny to people who aren’t fans of superhero movies or Deadpool himself but for fans it is everything we’ve wanted and more.

The action is exhilarating and rated R (15 for our UK readers) so we finally see a Marvel character kill people which has not happened and if it has no way near on this level. Heads are decapitated and kicked like a football into other heads, so much blood at times it was glorious.

Reynolds is the brilliant Deadpool we all knew he would be and casting Ed Skrein as a man who feels nothing is really clever because he can’t show emotion other than smug and smug british. Morena Baccarin can’t stop being attached to troubling men; Brody from Homeland, Jim Gordon from Gotham and now Deadpool. Apart from a growing typecast she was very funny as Vanessa. Negasonic Teenage Warhead (awesome every time you say it) was cool but limited, which is her character I guess but still she could’ve had more dialoue interchanges with Deadpool. The only thing I can say I didn’t like was the CGI on Colossus, for a movie that has the line ‘don’t make the supersuit green, or ANIMATED!’ it was out of place, part of that was down to the lower than normal budget I understand but it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Deadpool is the most fun I’ve had at a cinema since Star Wars but as good as it is, it’s really stupid but in the best possible way.
