We’ve just had a surprising, unusual announcement take place. Daedelic Entertainment has announced The Lord of the Rings – Gollum, an action-adventure game that showcases Gollum’s journey. According to Gaminformer, this game will be developed by Daedelic’s internal studio using Unreal Engine. The game will stay true to the established lore while still exploring new parts of Gollum’s story.
Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann said that “We tell Gollum’s story from a perspective never seen before, in any storytelling medium, all the while staying true to the legendary books of J.R.R. Tolkien. At a time when the games industry is undergoing structural changes and seeing new business models evolve, we are excited to realize a huge new production based on a story that has stayed fresh and relevant for more than 60 years.”
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will release in 2021, on PC and “all relevant console platforms at that time.” While names are not explicitly mentioned, this is likely referring to both current-generation and next generation hardware.
After 2017’s Middle-earth: Shadow of War, it’ll be interesting to see the approach taken for this game.
