Closed Beta Impressions of Overkill’s The Walking Dead

Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a co-op first-person survival game, set in the titular universe of The Walking Dead. Earlier this year, I had a chance to play Overkill’s The Walking Dead at E3 2018. I recently tried out the closed beta, wanted to see how it has progressed. Here’s my Closed Beta Impressions of Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

After booting up the game, one of the things that was immediately noticeable is the improvements to the character models. Their quality and detail looked a great deal better than the build I played at E3 2018, though it’s possible this was due to higher settings.

Overkill's The Walking Dead Closed Beta Impressions Speaking of settings, there’s a range of options including custom framerate, an FOV slider and other things like overall quality. It is very important to note that the game won’t run well on lower-specced hardware. Even if your PC meets the minimum requirements, you’re going to encounter lots of stuttering and framerate drops, even when set at 1080p resolution. My co-editor Nicholas tried playing with me but despite having a decent PC, it was nowhere near playable for him. Right now, I’d recommend having a computer that well exceeds the minimum requirements.

As mentioned in my E3 preview, you play as one of four characters: Heather, Aidan, Grant and Maya. They’ve each got different skills that can be unlocked and evolved, with a variety of gear to choose from.

Once I started a mission, it became clear it wasn’t just the characters that looked better. While the E3 build had unfinished textures, everything in what I played looked really good, with walkers rendered in disgusting clarity and the suburban environment appropriately littered with clutter. The hordes of Walkers were also impressive, with constant streams of dozens and dozens endlessly pressing in on me and my teammates.

Combat is difficult, with gunshots drawing in more hordes and alerting any human enemies to your presence. It’s worth re-emphasizing that this is a co-op game and without teammates to back you up, you won’t get very far. Even with teammates, it’s crucial that everyone has a variety of weapons and tools to meet every situation. Sometimes you need to push through to different locations as a group, at other points you’ll have to hold back the unending undead tide. There’s a good bit of mission variety and adaptability will be key to survival.

Things don’t end once you finish a mission though, as you have to take care of your base camp. Neglecting its defenses could have serious consequences if it is attacked by raiders or Walkers. You’ll also have to gather resources and manage morale to keep things running smoothly. With that in mind, this is a co-op game first: while there’s a story, the narrative isn’t likely to be a major focus.

The newer build in this closed beta shows a lot of promise, with better graphics and no major glitches, at least none that I encountered. At the same time, further optimization would definitely be helpful for players who don’t have extremely powerful PC hardware.

If you’re looking for a solid co-op game that you can have fun playing with your friends, while putting more though into things than just mindlessly killing things, this is definitely a game to keep an eye on.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead releases for PC on November 6th, 2018. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will release in February 2019. 505 Games will be publishing the console versions, while Starbreeze is handling the PC version. For some more information on the game, you can check out the Steam listing here.
