Zootopia has finally released in its last territory as it crosses the $900 million dollar mark worldwide. The film represents Walt Disney’s third largest ever release in Japan to the tune of $4 million (behind Frozen and Big Hero 6). It has also received an overwhelmingly positive reception from both critics and fans with an aggregate score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Of course Disney also had The Jungle Book out this week as it continues to rake in the cash at the foreign box office. Having become the largest grossing Hollywood movie in India ever at $28 million, The Jungle Book shows no sign of stopping as it has already made $97.4 million in China and a whopping $337 million total at the foreign box office. Its earnings worldwide stand at $528 million. The film’s current total gross makes it Disney’s third most successful live-action adaptation behind Cinderella ($543M) and Maleficent ($758M).
It’s going to be interesting to see how the box office shifts for Disney once Captain America: Civil War releases next week.
Putting those films aside we have The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Batman v.s Superman: Dawn of Justice to consider. Batman v.s Superman continues to crawl along after taking a massive dive in it’s second week of release. Having earned another $8.3 million in foreign markets, Zack Snyder’s critical flop stands at $851.6 million worldwide with almost no chance now of reaching the $1 billion dollar mark it had once hoped for.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War also got off to a not so dazzling start with an opening weekend of $100 million with $4 in the UK and $20 million in the US. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt. Huntsman: Winter’s War has debuted lower than its prequel in 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman.
