It’s been eight years since Avatar took the box-office by storm and landed nine Academy Award nominations, winning three. Since then there has been numerous stops and starts for James Cameron’s sequels. As of writing he has four sequels slated but the release dates have been jumping around for some time now. Cameron is one of the most innovative directors currently in the game, but it remains to be seen whether the long wait in between movies will have any impact upon the success of the coming sequels. They certainly have a lot to live up to given the original grossed a record $2.8 billion at the box office, blowing previous record-holder Titanic (another Cameron feature) out of the water (pun intended).
Sigourney Weaver has helped ease the nerves of fans though with recent comments. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter she said she was in training and that they would be filming by Fall. She also praised the scripts, which Cameron has previously claimed are completed for all four upcoming movies. The movies are “ambitious” and will be “well worth the wait” she assured fans.
So whilst there is as of yet no announced release date, at least fans can rest easy in the knowledge that the wheels are turning in the Avatar camp and that Cameron and co. are hard at work bringing Pandora back to life. Weaver is the not the only actor returning from the original, with lead actor Sam Worthington also reprising his role as former marine, Jake Sully, and Zoe Saldana as the Na’vi Neytiri.
