August was a good month for a lot of publishers and developers, with EA taking the top spot in software with Madden NFL 19 dominating the charts, with a few surprises as well. With its introduction to Xbox One backward compatibility Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 took the #8 spot which is a pleasant and kind of nostalgic surprise. With God of War holding onto the #7 spot, and Monster Hunter: World shows no signs of slowing down thanks to its release on Steam propelling the game to #2. Here is your full list of software sales across all platforms for the month of August in both physical and digital.

In hardware, the Nintendo Switch continues its road of domination as it was the best selling hardware platform in units sold for August. This month marks the unit and dollar sales are at the highest year to date for Nintendo hardware since 2011. The Nintendo Switch Neon Red/Blue Joy Con 32GB is the best selling hardware item in unit and dollar sales. While Sony’s PlayStation 4 is still the best selling hardware platform in both units and dollars. The 2018 YTD compared to 2017 hardware spending has increased by a whopping 22 percent, up to $2.1 billion. Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo’s Plug N Play Devices have played a huge role in this growth. Hardware spending is at its highest since back in 2011. In August 2018, hardware sales grew 28 percent when compared to August 2017.
Accessories, such as headsets and controllers as well as game card spending has grown by 33 percent to $2.3 billion when compared to last year. At this time last year $1.7 billion had been generated. Headset and controller sales are flying high still with headset sales up 88 percent when compared to last year and controller sales have increased by 26 percent.
With all this information, we can determine the industry is booming right now, with many developers, publishers, and console developers hitting record numbers.
