Aquaman rules the ocean and the box office this weekend

It turns out that Aquaman is not just the king of the underwater kingdom Atlantis, he is also the ruler of the box office. The latest live action hero flick from D.C. Comics brought a tidal of wave of cash to Warner Bros. – to the tune of over $67 million USDd. Aquaman also brought in an extra $4.5 million from Amazon Prime showings before the weekend bringing the total to over $72 million USD. Considering the fact that this is a 5-day holiday weekend we may see the film achieve a massive $100 million opening. This would make Aquman the sixth highest movie debut for a D.C. Comics franchise.

Disney released Mary Poppins Returns last Wednesday and when you add in the weekend receipts the movie brought in around $31 million USD against a budget of $130 million. Don’t worry too much about Disney – this movie should have a fairly strong showing through New Year’s Day. The film has yet to debut in markets such as Mexico, Japan and much of Europe.

Paramount’s latest entry in the iconic Transformers franchise, Bumblebee has performed as expected with about $21 million USD so far and an estimated worldwide total of $31 million by the end of the holiday weekend. Normally I would say that the movie should also perform strongly throughout the next week or two but there is now a total of three “hero” films battling for your dollars at the movie theaters right now. On that note, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swung through its second week with an estimated $16.7 million dollars wordwide domestically. The film just premiered in China and is estimated to have brought in about ^5 million from overseas markets with openings in Mexico, Japan and Italy still on the horizon.

Here are the top 5 highest grossing movies from the weekend:

  • The Mule
  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
  • Bumblebee
  • Mary Poppins Returns
  • Aquaman
  • We have another week of early movie releases to look forward thanks to Christmas. Sony will release Holmes and Watson starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. Vice will be released by Annapurna along with Nicole Kidman’s Destroyer. That looks like the most brutal role ever played by the lovely Ms. Kidman and I am eager to see it though I do not think it will be a smashing success at the box office.

Everybody here at The Inner Circle hopes that all of you are having a wonderful holiday season so far and I hope all of you movie aficionados out there beared with me as I brought you news from the box office this weekend. Your regular contributor, David, is busy answering the call of the ocean in Sea of Thieves tonight. Don’t worry – he will be back next week.
