Aquaman took the top spot this weekend. The movie is cruising to an easy $800 million, it should get that by next week. Sadly the newest movies couldn’t even stop the might of the underwater warrior. The power duo of Holmes and Watson couldn’t even break into the top five as the movie grossed an estimated $7.3 million. The reviews didn’t help the movie as it currently sits well below what the studio was hoping for. Maybe a second Step Brothers movie would have been a better pick than the classic story of Sherlock Holmes.
For the last weekend of 2018 Disney was still in the top three with Mary Poppins Returns. The movie grossed $28 million this weekend as it sits at $173 million world-wide. Bumblebee had a good weekend with an extra $20.5 million. That brings the world-wide total to $156 million. Expect a boost to the total as the movie will be released in China on January 4th. Studios have finally realized that the domestic box office is not the only lucrative area to release a movie. Thanks to countries like China we may get a second Warcraft movie.
Weekend Top Five
5. The Mule $11.7 million
4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse $18.3 million
3. Bumblebee $20.5 million
2. Mary Poppins Returns $28 million
1. Aquaman $51.5 million
In this year Marvel had five movies in the top ten. Some of the best movies were created jointly with other studios. One of those studios will be finally brought into the fold with the purchase of Fox. 2019 might be the year we get some news of the future of the X-Men and Fantastic Four. With the success of Aquaman the DC Univesrse will have more of an impact in the theaters. For now the real success is in shows like Titans, Gotham, and the CW lineup. I just wanted to thank Jason for taking over last weekend as I spent the time teaching my daughter how to play Sea of Thieves.
