2018: The Year of PSVR

I want to preface this article with the fact I do not own a PSVR yet. If I had the financial means I would have bought one long ago, I hope to soon purchase one during the holiday season. I am merely on the outside looking in on what’s shaping up to be one of the most interesting peripherals in the console industry in decades.

PSVR officially launched back on October 16, 2016, and was the first virtual reality headset to release on console. Prior to this, the only virtual reality headsets available were the marginally more expensive HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. While not hosting as high of specs as its competitors, a huge part of early adoption was due to the fact that it offered a brand new experience at half the cost of the competition. There was some notable software early on as well. Resident Evil VII was a huge boost to PSVR and with Capcom putting out an amazing Resident Evil title from a fresh first-person perspective, it was almost made for VR. Funny quirky experiences like Job Simulator also made for a different and more comical use of the technology, and while VR as a whole has definitely been a victim of shovelware software there has been tons of notable software as well. Many people (myself included) wrote off PSVR before it even got started,  looking back at how Sony completely failed to maintain support for the PS Vita. Many people felt that if PSVR didn’t sell gangbusters straight out of the gate it would quickly be scrapped. I am definitely glad to say Sony has done a great job at proving me wrong at every turn, and making me a fan of the work they have done with the platform.

The big push of high-quality PSVR software for me started with the release of Polyarc’s platforming masterpiece Moss. Blending the first person and third person platforming/puzzle solving with one of the most adorable platforming characters we have seen in a long time. Moss made a lot of people want to try out PSVR. Around this same time, Sony made a push to have demos of PSVR allowing people to go more hands-on and experience it for themselves in stores. This proved to be a winning strategy as more and more people were investing in after experiencing it for themselves. Now as we are slowly drawing 2018 to a close, we have seen some absolutely astonishing software come to PSVR. Which combined with games like God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man have made the PlayStation 4 the must-own console of 2018,  and PSVR just keeps giving people more reasons to invest.

What is the best selling game of all time? The obvious answer is Tetris. There isn’t a platform or device that you cannot play this historic game on basically. But how do you make Tetris different from its previous entries? Enter Tetris Effect, the project of love for developer Tetsuya Mizuguchi who you may remember from the game Lumines: Electric Symphony. The magic Tetsuya managed to infuse into a game that really has not been ever changed in Tetris and making it a transcending, colorful and musical experience is nothing short of extraordinary. Another game that has struck people with the VR bug is the cute little platforming game Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Developed by SIE Japan, Astro Bot Rescue Mission has earned comparisons in its innovations to the platforming genre in the way that Mario 64 reinvented the genre back in 1996. The is currently nominated as one of the best VR titles this year at The Game Awards 2018, and many people who have played Astro Bot often put it in their top 5 games of this year. Considering the wealth of games that we have been blessed with this year, that is quite the accomplishment.

It is certainly exciting as we continue to see more and more immersive and varieties of games hit PSVR, it makes us look forward and wonder. What does the future of PSVR hold? What other titles could come to PSVR and what franchises could we see cross the gap and have VR versions? While we may not have the answers to these questions, there is no doubt that Sony has done a great job in supporting PSVR and that 2018 is no doubt the year to purchase a PSVR.
